Recreational Marine Drivers + Personal Water Craft Licences

Here’s what you need to know.

Book online

STEP 1 - ONLINE COURSE

STEP 3 - PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT

STEP 2 - THEORY ASSESSMENT

Once you have booked into a course, your trainer will send you an email with a link to the online theory course.


The online course takes approximately 3-4 hours to complete and covers all the theory you will need for your training. At the end of the course, there is a quiz (practice test) for you to be able to test your knowledge prior to your assessment.

The theory assessment consists of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass the theory assessment, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) requires a score of 100% to pass. If a student answers any questions incorrectly, they will need to undergo additional training in these areas and will be given the opportunity to redo those questions.

If the student’s second attempt is unsuccessful, the student will be deemed “not yet competent” and will be required to undertake further training and resit assessment on another day.

To pass the practical assessment, each student will need to pass a formal practical assessment without assistance or guidance from the trainer.


Students will be given the opportunity to practice each of the manoeuvres prior to your assessment.


The activities include:

  • Man overboard
  • Safely recover a floating object
  • Port and starboard turn on and

  • Figure 8 on and off the plane
  • Berthing and unberthing
  • General navigation and control
  • Operations at 6 knots or less

If you are deemed not yet competent, your trainer will discuss options for additional training and assessment.

STEP 4 - GETTING YOUR LICENCE

Upon successful completion of all assessments, your trainer will provide you with a certificate of competency.


This form is to be taken to QLD Transport and processed to obtain your applicable licences.
